New Users
To access the equipment available in the Thermal Characterisation Facility it is necessary to register as a user
Access is only available via the PPMS online booking system
Step 1 Request registration and training using the PPMS website
Step 2 Applicants from departments other than Materials Science must pass the Safety Test
Step 3 Initial training
Step 4 Verification for access and online booking
Charges
All users must supply a valid University grant code to cover the charges listed below before starting work.
Standard rate for University of Cambridge: £25 per hour
(from 1 February 2025, this is assessed periodically and may be changed at any time)
A valid University grant code will be required before registration
Commercial analysis service: £100 per hour (ex VAT)

Current users
Bookings
Equipment can only be booked online using PPMS.
DSC and SDT instruments have autosamplers, allowing a queue of samples to be set up for unattended usage.
Please allow adequate time for all your experiments, remember to include time between experiments for cooling and changing samples.
Safety
Departmental safety procedures must be followed at all times.
Individual users must carry out a risk assessment before starting work, including pereparation, reaction products and disposal of residue.
Samples
Please ensure that samples are labelled and do not leave them lying around the Lab.
Samples will be disposed of daily, if you wish to retain your post-experiment sample, please contact the facility manager and leave a note in the space provided.
